A Port vintage chart maps how good each year was for Vintage Port. Unlike most wines, Port is only declared a vintage in the finest years — typically three or four in a decade — when the houses bottle an unblended wine from a single harvest to age for decades. The table below rates every declared year from 1908 to 2024, drawn from the tiers of the wines the houses actually released. A year is marked Universal when five or more houses declared, Limited when only a few did, and Single-quinta only in off years when houses skipped the general declaration but still bottled a single-estate wine.
Of the 62 vintages between 1908 and 2024, 42 carried a general declaration and only 11 rate as legendary: 1908, 1931, 1945, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1977, 1994, 2007, 2011, 2016.

Common questions about Port vintages
How many Port vintages have been declared?
PortDB records 42 declared Vintage Port years between 1908 and 2024, out of 62 vintages in the dataset. A year counts as declared when at least one house bottled a general Vintage Port; the remaining years saw only single-quinta releases.
What makes a year a Port vintage?
Port is declared only in the finest harvests — typically three or four a decade. Each house decides independently; when several declare the same year it is called a universal declaration. In lesser years the houses skip the declaration and release single-quinta ports from their best estates instead.
What is the best Port vintage ever?
The 11 legendary years — 1908, 1931, 1945, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1977, 1994, 2007, 2011, 2016 — are the benchmarks against which all others are judged. Of these, 1963, 1977, 1994 and 2011 are the most celebrated: universally declared, deeply structured, and built to age for half a century.
