A Port house — also called a producer or shipper — is the name that blends, ages and bottles the wine, and each of the great producers has a recognisable style that decides how its Vintage Ports age. PortDB sorts the 21 houses in its dataset into four maturation styles: structured, opulent, balanced and elegant. That style, stretched by the strength of the vintage, is what the maturity tool uses to place any bottle on its drinking window.
The five classic shippers — Taylor’s, Graham’s, Fonseca, Dow’s, Warre’s — are the houses most consistently rated at the top by critics, joined by Quinta do Noval and its rare Nacional. But there is no single “best” house: it depends whether you want the slow, structured power of a Taylor’s or the opulent generosity of a Graham’s. Below, every house is grouped by style, with its legendary and classic years drawn from PortDB’s hand-checked dataset of 313 wines.

Common questions about the Port houses
What are the main Port houses?
The five classic shippers are Taylor’s, Graham’s, Fonseca, Dow’s, Warre’s. Alongside them, Quinta do Noval (with its rare Nacional), Quinta do Vesuvio, Croft, Cockburn’s, Niepoort, Sandeman and Churchill’s are among the most sought-after. PortDB tracks 21 houses in all, spanning 1908–2024.
Which Port house is the best?
No single house wins outright. Taylor’s, Graham’s, Fonseca, Dow’s and Warre’s are the most consistently top-rated by critics, and Quinta do Noval Nacional is the rarest and most collectable of all. The honest answer is that it depends on style: structured houses reward patience, opulent houses give more, sooner.
What is the difference between Taylor’s, Graham’s and Fonseca?
Taylor’s is the benchmark structured house — austere and monumentally long-lived. Graham’s and Fonseca are opulent: richer and more generous, with Fonseca the more exotic and perfumed of the two. All three are top-tier; the choice is a matter of taste and of how long you are prepared to wait.
What does “single quinta” mean?
A single-quinta (SQVP) Vintage Port comes from one named estate and is usually released in the good — but not universally declared — years. These wines open earlier and are built to drink sooner than a house’s classic Vintage Port. PortDB flags them separately and shortens their drinking window accordingly.
